Spain vs Morocco prediction, odds, betting tips, and best bets for Round of 16 World Cup 2022
With the last Matchday of the 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage set to get underway tonight, Group B toppers Spain gear up to take on Morocco in a game that could have huge implications pertaining to qualification.
Despite finding themselves atop the group with 4 points, Spain will look to put in their best performance and go for all 3 points as it could help them finish at the top of the group. With Portugal (4 points) and Iran (3 points) set to take on each other in the other group fixture, a lot could be at stake when Fernando Hierro’s side step onto the field.
Anything but a loss is sure to send Spain through, while a bad defeat might just end their World Cup hopes.
Spain vs Morocco: Overview
Spain are through to the World Cup Last 16 after a real scare on Tuesday night with both Japan and Costa Rica leading at one point in the 2nd Half which would have seen Luis Enrique’s side eliminated. Spain did go on to lose to Japan but progressed in 2nd place with a knockout clash with neighbours Morocco their reward.
It did feel as though Spain became relatively content with a defeat in the latter stages of the Japan game, enabling them to progress in 2nd rather than 1st place into a slightly more favourable section of the draw. However that wasn’t the plan heading into the game and Spain’s sloppy start to the 2nd Half which resulted in two quick-fire Japanese goals would have been a concern for Luis Enrique.
They also looked vulnerable to the high press during the latter stages against Germany and some of the optimism and confidence from the utterly dominant win over Costa Rica on matchday one has been undone. That will present the Spain coach with some selection headaches heading into this game.
Striker Alvaro Morata has done well and scored in every game but the option of returning to a false nine and Marco Asensio will be a consideration. There are also doubts defensively but things should improve here with the likes of Jordi Alba and Aymeric Laporte expected to rotate back in.
As for Morocco, they certainly cannot be underestimated having topped a group that included Croatia and Belgium, the runners up and 3rd placed team at the last World Cup. They kept clean sheets against both of those sides which suggests Spain will have to work hard to create chances here.
The Moroccans also have plenty of talented players going forwards and are particularly strong on the right flank with Madrid-born Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech. The man leading the line will also be no stranger to Spain. Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri was on target in the 2-1 win over Canada last time out and is always a threat in the final third.
Spain vs Morocco key stats
- Spain is the only national team to win three consecutive major titles, including two back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012, while becoming the first European team to win a FIFA World Cup held outside of Europe in 2010. From 2008 to 2013, Spain won the FIFA Team of the Year, the second-most of any nation, behind only Brazil. From the start of 2007 to the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, Spain achieved 35 consecutive undefeated matches, a feat which they shared with Brazil, and a sport record at the time. Their achievements have led many experts and commentators to consider the 2008–2012 Spain squads one of the best ever sides in the history of world football.
- Internationally, Morocco won the 1976 African Cup of Nations, two African Nations Championships and the FIFA Arab Cup once. They have participated in the FIFA World Cup six times. Their best result came in 1986, when they were the first African national team to finish top of a group at the World Cup. However, they narrowly lost to eventual runners-up West Germany 1–0.The Atlas Lions were considered one of the best national football teams in the world when they ranked 10th in the FIFA World Rankings in April 1998, as the first African national team in history to be ranked by FIFA in the top ten national football teams. They were ranked by FIFA as the top African national team for three consecutive years, from 1997 to 1999. As of October 2022, Morocco is ranked as the 22nd best national team in the world.
Spain vs Morocco odds
Morocco were the surprise, yet fully deserved, winners of Group F ahead of Croatia, Belgium and Canada. They recorded seven points from three unbeaten matches including a 2-0 victory over Belgium.
Spain looked to be in cruise control in Group E after they thumped Costa Rica 7-0. They then drew 1-1 against Germany, only to be shocked by Japan who leapfrogged above them to claim top spot.
