Santos receives ‘rain of stones’ with ꜱtunning statement after Portugal’s crushing defeat
Before the tsunami of criticism that followed Portugal’s dramatic elimination from the 2022 World Cup, coach Fernando Santos made an ᴜn expected statement.
Portugal stopped at the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup after a ꜱhock 0-1 loss to Morocco. Although much appreciated, Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates had to leave the field in tears.
After Portugal’s defeat, a wave of fierce criticism was directed at head coach Fernando Santos. National NMH of the Iberian peninsula launched “hail and hail”, demanding the dismissal of the 68-year-old strategist because he thought he was no longer suitable.
However, despite the harsh reaction from the public, coach Fernando Santos ꜱuddenly announced that he would not leave the captain’s seat of Portugal despite the pressure.
Responding to the press, this military leader affirmed: “I will submit my resignation? Never had it. Resignation is not in my dictionary. Everything will be decided after the meeting between me and the chairman. I have been in charge of the Portuguese national team since 2014 and I have always been open about my position.
Now is not the time to talk about my future. As usual, we will return to Lisbon and then I will speak with the president of the federation to find out what is best for Portugal.”
The contract between coach Fernando Santos and the Portuguese Football Federation lasts until the end of EURO 2024. That means if he is not fired, this coach will continue to lead Seleccao for nearly 2 more years.
