England vs Senegal prediction, odds, betting tips, and best bets for Round of 16 World Cup 2022
After topping Group B with seven points from their three matches, England advanced to the knockout stages for the sixth time in the previous seven World Cups. The Three Lions will hope to improve upon their fourth-place finish in the 2018 edition when they meet Senegal who finished second in Group A with six points. England’s last match was an efficient 3-0 win over Wales while Senegal is coming off an excellent 2-1 victory over Ecuador to secure their spot in the last 16. The match is scheduled to kick off at 7 PM UK time at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.
Given their overall performance in the group stages and their position as the fifth-ranked team according to FIFA, it isn’t too much of a surprise to see England come into this match as significant favorites with odds of 1.53 for the win. The underdogs, Senegal, will fetch odds of 8.00 for those punters thinking they can pull off the upset, while a draw comes in at odds of 3.8.
England vs Senegal Overview
England needed a strong response after their goalless draw with the United States on the second matchday. A 3-0 victory over their historic rivals Wales, which included a brace by Marcus Rashford, should put the Three Lions in excellent spirits ahead of their round of 16 clashes. On paper, this England side has the talent to be compared with the very best teams in the competition but recent results point to a team that is underperforming. England’s build-up to the 2022 World Cup was disastrous as Gareth Southgate’s team failed to win a single one of their six Nations League matches, drawing three and losing the other three. The hope among supporters is that the team will step up their play on the world’s biggest stage and so far the players have delivered.
On the other side, Senegal comes into this match off the back of two victories and a loss in Group A to finish second behind the Netherlands. It was a gutsy group stage performance from the defending African champions, who many will have forgiven for a failure to bounce back after the news that their talisman Sadio Mane will have to miss the tournament as well as their 2-0 defeat to the Dutch in the opening match. The Lions of Taranga responded by scoring five goals in their following two matches, proving there is much more to the side than simply Mane’s influence. Senegal will be confident of finding the net in this match, having scored in 13 of their last 14 fixtures, but could find things difficult against an England defense that is coming off back-to-back clean sheets and rarely looked troubled against Wales.
England vs Senegal key stats
- England has never played a game against Senegal on the international stage and will need to adapt to a new opponent this weekend.
- Senegal has won three of their last six matches against European opponents in the FIFA World Cup and lost their last such match against the Netherlands by a 2-0 scoreline.
- England is unbeaten in their seven matches against African opponents in the FIFA World Cup, with their previous knock-out fixture of this nature coming against Cameroon in 1990.
- African countries have lost eight of their last nine knock-out matches against European opponents, with the previous such victory coming in 2002 when Senegal got the better of Sweden.
- England is looking to reach the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in consecutive editions for the first time since 2006.
England vs. Senegal odds
England is heavily favored to see off a Senegal side who also lost Ballon d’Or nominee Sadio Mane to injury before the tournament started, depriving head coach Rigobert Song of his key attacking talent.
Since beating France 1-0 in their first-ever World Cup match in 2002, Senegal has conceded at least once in each of their 10 games in the competition. Their 2-0 defeat against Oranje was the only game of their last 11 in which they have failed to score.
