England vs France in World Cup- Date, time, early odds and history for quarterfinal match

England have impressed in Qatar, but now it gets very serious. Kylian Mbappe and defending champions France are up next in the quarterfinals.

The French cantered into the final eight with a 3-1 victory over Poland, largely thanks to an Mbappe performance that will terrify England fans: two phenomenal goals and a smart assist for Olivier Giroud.

However, England are the tournament’s top-scoring team and comfortably beat Senegal to progress, 3-0.

England vs France history

This will be only the second meeting at a World Cup between these two European superpower nations, and the first since 1982.

In total, France and England have shared the pitch 31 times since their first meeting 99 years ago. The Three Lions lead on the head-to-head, winning 17 games, drawing five and losing to Les Bleus nine times.

Here, we look back at both World Cup clashes between the two nations.

1966 World Cup, England

While the 1966 World Cup continues to be referenced constantly in England, it was one to forget for France.

England laid down the foundations for their first and only World Cup glory by topping Group 1, beating France 2-0 in their final group match at Wembley Stadium. It confirmed France’s exit, finishing bottom of the group.

Liverpool great Roger Hunt scored twice in either half, roared on by a huge crowd of 98,000 in London.

For many, this game is equivalent to a final. England and France are considered to be the favourites to go all the way to the end and win the golden prize of football. However, unfortunately for one of these great nations, it would be the end of their journey in Qatar.

France are looking to defend their status as World Champions, and become the first nation to win the World Cup consecutively since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Before the tournament, some were sceptical of the French making it past the early knockout stages, particularly due to the long list of injuries which has seen many (including veterans Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, and Karim Benzema) miss out.
